Trentesimo giornata:

I was feeling better but still coughing. To avoid coughing on my fellow students, I took another day off from class. Plus I needed to catch up on homework.

Today was National Unity and Armed Forces Day. November 4, 1918 was when WWI ended on the Italian front. A parade and ceremonies were going on between 9:00 and 11:00. I did not attend but I saw jets fly overhead while trailing the colours of the Italian flag.

They went past twice but were going so fast the colours were disippating before I could take a photo.

On my way to a pharmacy to get cough drops, I looked in on Sant’Andrea delle Fratte. There are two Bernini statues which were intended for Ponte Sant’Angelo but were placed inside the church to protect them from the elements and copies were put on the bridge.

I have been marvelling/complaining about the crowds around the Trevi Fountain since I arrived. The fountain is late Baroque, for the most part, not my favourite style but the design is attractive if not particularly significant in art history terms.

It was designed by the architect Nicola Salvi, but took elements from designs by Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Pietro da Cortona who had sent drafts to Pope Urban VIII. The Pope had set up a competition for a new design for the fountain but died before awarding the job. A few years later, Pope Clement XII held a competition won by Salvi.

After working on my homework, I took a break to sketch a detail from the Trevi Fountain. I worked from a photo I took earlier in the day, when I got next to the top railing. But there is nowhere to sit in front of the fountain unless I paid to go to the bottom area and I’m not sure they would let you sit there.
