Ventiseiesimo giornata: Frankfurt

Went for a morning stroll to get a bite of breakfast and see the neighbourhood.

The view out of the hotel room window was not very inspiring.

But not far away, the outdoor market was getting set up.

I could see a church spire so walked in that direction. The buildings are an interesting contrast of old and new.

The skyscrapers of the business area in the distance.

An interesting little corner.

A short narrow street:

The church was the Dom, the main cathedral of Frankfurt.

We visited the church in 2016.

It is on the main historic square which was almost entirely reconstructed after WWII.

Saturday morning the square was quiet.

The site of book burning:

Too bad it was so cold. It could have been a good spot to sit and sketch.

Instead I went inside a little bakery for a croissant and cappuccino.

Later we went to the market to purchase dinner ingredients.

I like that you can buy just the amount of herbs you need and not a huge amount that will go bad before you can use it.

It is apple season.

This cheese seller was in the Halloween decorating mood.

After we walked along the Main river to go to the Staedel Museum.

The museum had an exhibition called Mary Magdalena.

The image, iconography and concept of Mary Magdalen has evolved from specific biblical references to include extra-biblical texts and probably most significantly, to incorporating references to other women in biblical text to the notion of Mary Magdalen and heightening the dramatical characteristics such as Mary as an erotic object, penitent follower and apostle among apostles.

Some of the less common depictions include Mary preaching.

A good El Greco of a penitent Mary Magdalen, likely inspired by Titian.

Looked a bit at the permanent collection but one of my favourites, Rembrandt, was undergoing restoration.

Walked back along the river on the other side.

A big concern for the day was planned demonstrations.

Did not see any evidence of these demonstrations during the afternoon but many shops were closed and some boarded up. Later in the evening, the concern became vandalism and looting. The police were out near my hotel.

Not far away, some people wanted sneakers.
