Trentatresimo giorno: Palazzo Reale, Galleria Sabauda

I wanted to look at the art in Galleria Sabauda, a collection that includes the royal art collection and later added collections. The gallery is part of the royal museums all sold as one ticket.

It’s about 1.5 kms from the train station:

And about the same distance in a different direction to the Mole:

To get to the gallery, you need to navigate the tourist groups looking at the former royal palace of the House of Savoy, or Savoi, who were kings of the Savoy region in the Alps are of France, Switzerland and Italy. They later also became rulers of Sardinia and Sicily and when Italy was first unified, they became the first kings of united Italy.

The hunting lodge we visited the day before was one of the many residences they held. The royal palace in Turin is also oppulent and to me, over decorated. I wanted to get to the art gallery but took a few photos of the palace as I dodged and weaved past tourists.

Above, the armoury room.

Another big decorated room:

The palace includes a chapel where the Shroud of Turin (Sindone di Torino) is housed when it is not on display:

The Gallery is not nearly as busy as the palace.

Some highlights include Guido Reni:

Van Dyck:

Reubens:

Fra Lippi:

Pollaiuolo (who influenced Raphael):

Fillipino Lippi:

A number of early Giovanni Bellini paintings:

Some Veronese including an early supper scene:

Part of an altarpiece by Tintoretto that was rescued when the church caught fire:

Andrea del Sarto:

A pair of Bronzinos:

A tiny Van Eyck:

A Duccio:

Botticelli:

A Luca Signorelli:

One of two Mantegnas (the other in terrible condition):

A tiny Rembrandt for which there is a handy magnifying glass nearby:

The gallery is a pretty good collection (although no Caravaggios but a lot of Caravaggisti who I did not photograph).

Then it was time for a last meal before Robin and Inge needed to head home.

Above hazelnut flan, below stuffed onion:

Duck breast with cherries:

Wild boar cutlets with carrots:

Plin (meat stuffed ravioli) with tomato sauce:

Mulled wine sorbet:

Tiramisù:

When we returned to the hotel, it stopped raining and we could see the Mole in the distance.

Then it was time to say goodbye to Inge and Robin. We had an evening of packing our bags to move on from Torino and Italy.
