Trentaduesimo giorno: Stupinigi with company

Our son and daughter-in-law joined us for a weekend visit. The rain limited what we could get up to.

First lunch:

We then took a taxi 10 kms out of central Torino to Palazzina di caccia di Stupinigi, which translates as Little Hunting Palace of Stupinigi. This was where the royal family of Savoy would host hunting parties for up to 200 of their closest friends. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site so Robin was keen to visit.

The theme of a stag features heavily in the decoration as well as a statue on top of the building.

The rooms of the hunting lodge that you can visit make up only about half the main building. There are many outer buildings as well. The rooms are over the top decorated in Baroque and Roccoco style

Even bathtubs are elaborately decorated.

Silk, lace and painted wood wall covering: I would hate to have to dust this place.

A music cabinet:

The gardens looked like they were starting to flood with all the rain.

Lots of decorated ceilings.

Above the main salon with some many stag heads.

The road to Stupinigi followed a direct line from the royal palace. Modern roads interrupt the flow a bit but it is still a pretty straight route.

Waiting for a taxi:

Dinner was a Consorzio, a modern twist on traditional Piemontese cuisine.

Below a crispy egg starter with ham.

Risotto with bone marrow and brown sauce (very rich):

Braised beef with carrot puree.

Lamb and chick peas:

Peppers and beans:
