Roma: day 22: Second departure, second visit to Galleria Borghese

Allie and Carmen returned to Ottawa.

Scott was suffering cold symptoms so slept through the morning after saying goodbye. Sidney and I visited Forno Monteforte which was around the “block” from the apartment. They claim they won a prize for their panettone. Their sandwiches were pretty good.

We had tickets to the Galleria Borghese so we could look at what we missed on our visit over a week ago. Given Scott’s fragile health, we took a taxi. We had enough time to sketch while we waited for our timed entry.

We all enjoyed the Rubens exhibition which we hadn’t had the time to see before. The exhibition showed Rubens’ connection with various Italian artists, particularly those working in Rome.

Below a Rubens sketch and Bernini clay model of a lion.

Rubens also sketched ancient statues.

His paintings were spectacular but I really enjoyed the opportunity to see his sketches

I always want to look at the Caravaggios.

And the Berninis. (Maybe the video will load.)

After taxing back to Piazza Navona, we stopped into Mimi e Coco, an enoteca or wine bar, for refreshment.

Then we wandered further down Governo Vecchio to Fattoincasa for an early dinner. Three late nights in a row left us all tired and some of us with a cold. I forgot to take photos at dinner which was some classic Roman dishes of pasta and lamb.
