Roma: day 20: New Year’s Day

We went for a stroll around Trastevere, which means across the Tiber. It was a working class neighbourhood but which has now become a trendy place to live.

Lots of street art.

Looked at Santa Maria in Trastevere which is one of the few mainly churches in Rome that still retains its Medieval character.

Big presepe

Found a lively spot for lunch.

Then to Santa Cecilia in Trastevere. When we arrive, it wasn’t open as scheduled but a very elderly nun eventually opened the gate.

The view across the piazza.

The current church is mostly the result of 18th century renovations.

Went to Otoleg for gelato but it was closed.

On the return to the apartment, some of us tried Fior da Luna gelato which had one of the best nocciola I had tasted this trip.

Our New Year’s Day tradition has been to eat sushi which usually we make ourselves. Instead we went to Zuma which describes itself as a itzakaya, a type of Japanese restaurant that includes more than sushi. The restaurant is in the top two floors of the Fendi building which had some good views from the windows.

Initially we were seated by the sushi bar, but the table was too big so moved to a more appropriate size for sharing.

Most of the pieces had been grabbed before photos started
